Hafengeburtstag at Wandelhalle Hamburg

The Shanty Choir “Windrose” is in the Wandelhalle Hamburg on May 6, 2023! 🎉

When asked what shanties are, the answer is usually: shanties are work songs sung on board sailing ships, where it was extremely important that many activities were done by the sailors together in unison.

As a result, there were also different types of shanties for different types of jobs. However, the origin of the song can be traced back to ancient times, when singing on board had a religious character, and at the same time was to ask the gods for help on the dangerous voyages with the small ships.

For the occasion of this year’s 834th port birthday, the shanty choir “Windrose” serves a full portion of Hamburg to us in the Wandelhalle! On Saturday, May 6, 2023, the gentlemen, directed by Helmut Stegmüller, will fill our hall with maritime, North German songs starting at 3 p.m.

Come by and enjoy the songs of Hamburg’s traditional singers. We look forward to singing and swaying to the music with you!
